When looking for marriage counseling how do you know who to choose?
One of the most important parts of counseling is finding a therapist that you connect with. Specifically in marriage counseling it can be hard to find someone that both the husband and wife like. Many therapists tend to be harder on one spouse than the other, or they can take turns on who is 'in trouble' for their behaviors each session.
My philosophy is that there are things that each person in the relationship can improve on in order for the relationship to get better. Though, one person may look to be the "main problem" often times it's the reactions or lack there of that has caused the marriage to get where it's at.
For instance, one spouse may use anger to stop a conversation. This is something that can be worked on during sessions to get through conversations in a productive way. It often takes learning from the other spouse in how to talk about problems for the communication can occur. If for instance we talk to our spouse pointing our what's wrong with them, this can escalate them into anger. Though it's still our own responsibility to address our anger, no matter what others say (turn the other cheek), it can help both parties when no one is feeling attacked (by words or anger).
Going to someone who isn't going to vilify one of the spouses and instead stick to communication skills for both to work on can breakthrough the negative cycle.
Along with working with someone who is going to respect both of you it's also important to find someone with your same beliefs. As a Christian counselor my goal is to help you work through the issues and find that connection and togetherness that was lost. Non-believing counselors doesn't hold the same values.
Several studies have found that both clients and their therapists view online therapy favorably. It's effectiveness to treat mental health symptoms are just as good as in person with even an increase in outcomes by women.
Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and it plays a role in how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Therapy can help by providing support, education, and strategies to manage mental health conditions. It can improve your coping skills, relationships, and overall well-being. It can dig into your past and assess how that's affecting your present.
To bill insurance you will need a diagnosis from the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). However, when paying out of pocket a diagnosis is not needed. This helps insure your privacy from the insurance company as well as allow you to get the help you need.
