How do I get started

When you’re looking for support, reaching out can be the hardest part. Once you’ve contacted Unlocking Beauty, we will schedule either a 15-minute no fee consultation or your billable 53 minute appointment (you choose). Together, we will decide if working with me would be a good fit for you via online therapy.

How often will we meet for therapy?

Every week we meet for online therapy in Minnesota. This is for your benefit. We know from experience working with clients struggling with mental health or marriage issues that you need to meet frequently and consistently to get the most benefit and to help you reach your goals. This is supported by research that clients who attend counseling weekly have better treatment outcomes.

How long are online therapy sessions?

Therapy sessions typically run 53 minutes. During the first 1 to 2 online therapy sessions, we will complete an initial assessment to gather history, answer questions, and figure out goals for working together.

How many sessions will I need?

The length of time in online therapy for mental health or marriage counseling varies based on your needs and goals. After your assessment, we’ll determine a personal treatment plan to addresses both. Some issues are more complex than others and will take longer to heal. We will help you track your progress, and when you’re ready to finish your sessions, we will celebrate with you and develop a plan to help you maintain what you’ve achieved.

What are your online therapy rates in Minnesota?

The session fee at Unlocking Beauty is $225 per session for individual and couples therapy sessions. I give a 10% discount for out of pocket clients (those without insurance) if the session is paid the day of or before.

Do you take insurance?

I currently take: Sanford, Optum Medica, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN, United Health Care (UBH), HealthPartners, BluePlus, and PrimeWest.

Do you offer therapy without insurance?

For insurance (other than medicare/medicaid) you'll need to contact your provider and make sure you have out of network converge for mental health outpatient counseling services. You will then be charged the total amount ($225) and your insurance will reimburse you at the their chosen rate.

As an out-of-network insurance provider, we will provide you with the information needed to make an insurance claim (what’s known as a superbill) that can be submitted to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement at the beginning of each month.

Please be aware that I am an opted out provider with Medicare. This means Medicare will not reimburse you for the cost of services. If you are a Medicare beneficiary, we will need to enter into a private contract for therapy services in order for you to receive treatment at Unlocking Beauty.

Notice: Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

How do you collect payment for online therapy sessions?

Payment for your full session fee is due at the time of service. I take major credit cards, debit cards, Venmo, and Paypal, through secure online check-out. Payments are required before further sessions can be booked for out of pocket clients.

Copays are also due at time of service and can be paid the same way as a full session.

What is your cancellation policy?

Unlocking Beauty, llc maintains a 2-business-day cancellation/rescheduling fee policy. You will be responsible for the entire session fee if you cancel or reschedule within 2 business days of your appointment time.

Do I need to be in Minnesota to do online therapy?

Yes, you need to be in Minnesota to work with me. Due to state licensing guidelines, I can only provide services to clients located in Minnesota.

For not mental health issues I am available for Christian Coaching, which can be done throughout the United States. Coaching is different from counseling as it focuses on the here and now and future goals, without addressing past issues or diagnosable mental health issues.

How do I prepare for my online therapy session?

We are happy that you selected to work with Unlocking Beauty using telehealth video counseling. Please read the following video counseling preparation guide courtesy of Person-Centered Tech.

1. Create a confidential space
   Things to consider:

    Is the space private?

Can you lock the door? If not, will others who have access to the space respect your request for privacy and not enter the room?

Can others outside the room hear you talking?

If so, can you create white noise with a fan or other form of background noise? (Preferably placed outside the doorway of the room you’re in.)

Consider using headphones or earbuds so that your provider’s voice cannot be heard by others.

Examples of confidential spaces If you have a hard time finding a confidential space

These are not ideal but might work if an ideal setup is not available. If you use any of these, please make sure that the space is comfortable for you. Being comfortable is very important.

   Laundry Room

   Walk-In-Closet

   BasementAttic

Your car, parked in a safe, private spot. (We want to emphasize that private does not mean secluded. Please do make sure you are in a safe location.)

2. Basic tech considerations

If you’re using a tablet or phone, please make sure it is in a stand and is stable.

Please make sure that the camera is about level with your eyes; this may require you to elevate the device or camera.

A laptop or desktop computer is ideal, preferably with a large display.

Please make sure that you’re well-lit and don’t have a bright light source directly behind you.

3. Maximize your connection

Move your computer as close as you can to your WiFi router (the box that broadcasts the WiFi). Or better yet, plug your computer into the router with an Ethernet cable.

Next, quit or close out any programs you don’t need.

You will receive the link for your video session via proton email. If you don’t receive a link, please email or text right away.
